Voting Rules Everyone Needs To Know

July 10, 2026

What if you voted early, then your candidate dropped out? What happens if you have already marked your ballot, but haven’t turned it in yet? Can you change your vote when you vote early?

The short answer is, “Yes, you can take care of these situations and more, even if you take advantage of early voting in Michigan.” Don’t let questions like these stop you from exercising your right to vote! Information is a good cure for uncertainty.

Early voting begins in Michigan on the second Saturday before the election. It ends on the Sunday before the election. During this period, citizens can take ballots to the designated place and turn them in. In Cass County, this is currently at the Cassopolis VFW, 131 S. Broadway, Cassopolis, MI 49031. The hours are 8 AM until 4 PM daily. For the upcoming Primary Election, early voting begins on Saturday, July 25 and ends on Sunday, August 2, 2026. For the General Election, early voting runs from Saturday, October 24 through Sunday, November 1, 2026.

Voting is a precious gift - be sure to use it!

If you change your mind for any reason after you start the process, there are still options. Your ballot can be amended right up until you put it in the machine. If you have already marked it, and then change your mind, take the ballot to the early voting center. Ask that it be “spoiled”. You can then get a new ballot to mark as you wish.

If you mailed in your absentee ballot or dropped it at an official drop box, you can still request that the ballot be spoiled and receive a new one. The deadline to do this is the day before the election in person, and the Friday before the election if you need to receive it by mail.

For the most up-to-date election information and rules for voting early, please visit the state’s page at https://www.michigan.gov/sos/elections/voting/early-in-person-voting.

Most importantly, VOTE! No matter if you choose absentee, mail-in, early, or election day in person voting, exercise your right to have a say in the direction of our area, state, and country.
